Bill Hemmerling 1943 – 2009 was the poster artist for Jazz Fest in 2005. A self-taught artist, Hemmerling’s themes were often spiritual in nature while capturing eloquent depictions of Southern African American folk culture. His work deeply affects people and conveys a sense of serenity.
Bill Hemmerling was the featured poster artist for the Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival 7 times. He was the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival poster artist in 2005 and the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine poster artist for two yearas. He was the recipient of many humanitarian awards and was honored by the New Orleans Museum of Art. His work has been on display in New york, Chicago, Wisconsin and even in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic.Bill Hemmerling was an untrained outsider artist and preferred to paint on recycled or found objects using discarded house paint. He began to paint when he retired from Sears as a visual artist setting up store displays throughout the state of Louisiana.
